Sometimes in therapy, words don’t quite reach what’s really going on. You might know something feels difficult, heavy, or overwhelming, but you can’t fully explain why. In those moments, I may invite us to gently turn our attention towards the body.
When I work in this way, it’s always slow and at your pace. We begin by noticing what you’re feeling inside — not trying to change it or analyse it, just becoming aware of it together. Often feelings show up physically: a tightness in the chest, a knot in the stomach, a tingling, or an ache in the hands or shoulders.
By paying kind attention to these sensations, we can begin to connect more deeply with your inner world. The body often holds emotions that haven’t yet found words, and when we listen in this way, something begins to soften. Many clients tell me this approach helps them feel more grounded and more connected to themselves.
We might explore where the sensation is and what it’s like. Sometimes it helps to describe it using images, colours, or shapes rather than words — perhaps it feels like a hard stone, dark or heavy in colour, or something small and closed in on itself. There’s no right way to do this. I’ll support you to stay curious and gentle with whatever shows up.
If it feels right for you, we can then begin to notice what emotions or thoughts might be connected to that feeling. Often, simply allowing the feeling to be seen and acknowledged — without judgement — can be deeply nourishing. As humans, we can be very quick to push ourselves on or to be critical of what we feel. This way of working helps us reconnect with kindness and self-compassion, which is often where real change begins.
Working with the body can support you to slow down, listen to yourself, and develop a deeper sense of care for your inner experience. If you’re someone who feels disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck in your thoughts, this gentle approach can offer another way in — one that honours your whole experience, not just what can be put into words.
If this feels as though it connects with you, please do get in touch.
